NHBF: Campaigning for hair and beauty sector  businesses

We campaign to make your voice heard at the highest levels on the key issues that affect you and your business, including COVID recovery, skills and training, and aesthetics regulation.

We are also raising awareness of important industry topics to support your business, such as employment law, mental health, inclusivity, and sustainability, and providing information and resources to help our Members.

In 2021, we secured the following COVID recovery support for you:

  • Earlier salon reopening in April 2021, ahead of the rest of the high street
  • Higher restart grants
  • Furlough and SEISS payments extended to September 2021
  • Further support through the autumn Budget: 50% discount on business rates, improvement relief, the extension of start-up grants and the recovery loan scheme
  • Wider distribution of the Additional Restrictions Grants (ARG) to personal care businesses
  • Extended protection from eviction for commercial tenants
  • Temporary changes to the hair and beauty qualifications and apprenticeship end point assessments (EPAs)

In addition, we represented your views in the following ways:

  • Led a major campaign to HM Treasury for a VAT cut and COVID relief fund, supported by an authoritative, independent report outlining the impact of lockdown and restrictions on the sector

  • Regular dialogue with the UK and the devolved governments to shape their COVID guidance for the sector
  • Rolled out quarterly State of the Industry surveys, taking your voice to Government
  • Held regular meetings with the Small Business Minister Paul Scully MP and with the newly created Personal Care Sector team in the Department of Business (BEIS)
  • Pressed the Government to ensure a level playing field in future regulations, so they apply equally to salons and mobile or home-based businesses
  • Organised visits by MPs and MSPs to local salons to help them understand the business environment
  • Supported the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing and influenced its report on aesthetics regulation, paving the way for future legislation
  • Supported the introduction of the Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021, which made it an offence to provide Botox and fillers to under-18s
  • Joined other organisations campaigning to include an amendment regulating aesthetics in the Health and Care Bill
  • Gave oral and written evidence to the Low Pay Commission’s review of the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates
  • Made many other submissions to Government and Parliament
  • Promoted discussion on trans-awareness, mental health, hair type classifications, diversity and sustainability through Clubhouse and blogs
