The NHS test and trace programme

The government’s test and trace programme aims to help slow the spread of the virus and save lives. (The NHS has stated that due to high demand, it cannot guarantee that everyone who requests a test will get one.)

How does it work?

The NHS test and trace service:

  • Provides testing for anyone who has symptoms of coronavirus to find out if they have the virus.
  • Gets in touch with anyone who has had a positive test result to help them share information about any close recent contacts they have had.
  • Alerts those contacts, where necessary, and tells them they need to self-isolate to help stop the spread of the virus.

Individuals will be told to self-isolate if they:

  • Have coronavirus symptoms and are awaiting a test result.
  • Have tested positive for coronavirus.
  • Are a member of the same household as someone who has symptoms or has tested positive for coronavirus.
  • Have been in close recent contact with someone who has tested positive and received a notification to self-isolate from NHS test and trace.

Employees in self-isolation are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay for every day they are in self-isolation, as long as they meet the eligibility conditions. Employees can use their paid leave if they prefer to do so.

Employers can reclaim Statutory Sick Pay for the first 14 days of absence due to coronavirus.

Find out how long individuals need to self-isolate for on the NHS website.

Alternative funding for small and micro businesses

Small and micro businesses in England with fixed property costs that are not eligible for the small business grant fund or the retail, hospitality and leisure grant fund may be eligible for the government’s discretionary grants scheme up to an amount of £25,000. Find out more on the government website.

Although your salon or barbershop can now offer click and collect services for retail products, it has been confirmed that your premises must remain closed to the public. See our previous update on offering click and collect.
