£1.3 billion lost to fraud

UK Finance's annual fraud report has found that criminal gangs stole more than £1.3 billion in 2021, up 8% on 2020's figure of £1.2 billion. UK Finance is calling for greater cross-sector action to help stymie fraudsters, and is urging businesses and consumers to remain vigilant to guard against falling victim to different types of fraud, from impersonation scams to authorised push payment fraud.

Tips to prevent business fraud:

  • Be sceptical
  • Know your business inside out
  • Know your customers and suppliers
  • Identify areas where your business is vulnerable to fraud
  • Take extra care against cyber-attacks.

More tips can be found on the MET police website.

Net Zero Week

This week (2-8 July) is Net Zero Week, a national awareness week aiming to help businesses and households on their path towards sustainability.

Tips to be more sustainable.

  • Ask your local council for recycling tips and advice, for example, ask if they accept used foil strips for recycling.
  • Choose products that come in biodegradable or recyclable packaging.
  • Have clearly labelled recycling stations placed in strategic locations in your salon or barbershop to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
  • Use biodegradable bags instead of plastic when selling retail products.
  • Use biodegradable disposable towels (for example, Easydry). In a four-stylist salon this can save you up to 64,000 litres of water per year compared with the traditional laundry option.
  • Switch to a green energy supplier.

Salon and barbershops can find more information on sustainability in this NHBF blog.
