The NHBF’s annual industry statistics for 2024 are now available.
The NHBF’s annual industry statistics offer a valuable overview of the state of the hair, beauty and barbering industries in the UK. The data in the report includes success rates, turnover, start-up numbers, working patterns, apprenticeships, age, gender and industry trends.
Key findings from NHBF 2024 report
Key findings for 2023 include:
- The hair and beauty industry generated £5.8bn in turnover in 2023-2024.
- The number of hair & beauty businesses in the UK increased by 1,240 (2.5%) last year

The number of business turning over less than £50k decreased but those turning over £50-249k rose.

The total workforce declined again by 16,628 (7.5%) in 2023 with declines in both male and female employees.

46% of the workforce are aged 16-34. The number of 16-24 year olds has risen by 4448 over the last year (12%) building on a rise over the previous year.

The number of apprenticeships starts continues to increased slightly overall in UK in 2022-23 but not as high as 2021/22.
What does the hair and beauty industry include?
Official definitions of the hair and beauty industry include:
- Hair washing, cutting, dyeing, and styling for men and women.
- Barbering, shaving, and beard trimming.
- Trichology (scalp and hair care).
- Facial massage, manicures, pedicures, make-up, and electrolysis.
- Other beauty treatments.
(Note: Wigs are not included in this definition.)
