Make the grade with your back-to-school campaigns

The back-to-school season is big business, prompting a flurry of spending as parents, school children and carers stock up on school uniforms and lunch boxes and give their child a fresh haircut. The ASA has rules on advertising to children, promotions and competitions, which it expects advertisers to comply with. Follow these tips to ensure that your back-to-school campaigns are top of the class.

Tips include:

  • all significant terms and conditions should be made clear in your marketing.
  • you should make clear that adult permission is likely to be required, especially on hair and beauty treatments.
  • communications aimed at children cannot include a direct exhortation to buy a product or ask someone to buy it for them.

Video: Watch State of Industry Video

Watch NHBF's State of Industry Report highlight Video.

The latest NHBF State of the Industry survey findings show that, after a long, hard two years, the sector is finally showing again the more positive signs of recovery and levels of business confidence that we first saw in September 2021. However, the sector is still in a fragile place within a 'perfect storm' of rising staff costs, energy prices and supply price inflation. So the NHBF is calling on governments across the UK to continue to support the industry's recovery.

NHBF Campaigning for You

Based on Members' input, the NHBF sent a summary of the State of the Industry quarterly survey results for July to key Ministers. This included the new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, welcoming him to his new role and Ministers in BEIS (Department for Business), and new Small Business Minister Jane Hunt. The Business team in the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit in 10 Downing Street underlined to us that it was reassuring to see signs of recovery, that the sector represents an 'important pillar' of the UK economy and that they will 'continue to work with NHBF and the industry on the challenges you face'. We also sent the results to Economy Ministers in the four nations and a range of Parliamentary contacts in Westminster, the Senedd, Holyrood and Stormont.
