UK borrowing higher than expected
The UK government's borrowing increased more than expected last month, putting additional pressure on Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), borrowing—the difference between public spending and tax income—reached £20.7 billion in June. This marks an increase of £6.6 billion compared to the same month last year. The rise in borrowing was driven by higher spending on public services and increased debt interest payments, which exceeded the revenue generated from various taxes, including the employers' National Insurance contributions that were raised in April, as reported by the ONS.
